What is autologous augmentation?
Autologous breast augmentation, also known as fat transfer to the breasts, involves transferring fatty tissue from one area of the body to another. The fat is first harvested by liposuction, then processed and injected into the breast tissue. The aim is to restore volume, adjust shape or reduce breast asymmetry. Some of the transferred fat may gradually be reabsorbed, so the final volume depends on how much tissue takes in the new area.

The procedure
Autologous breast augmentation takes place in two consecutive stages. First, fatty tissue is harvested by liposuction from selected areas of the body, such as the abdomen, hips or thighs. The harvested fat is then processed and prepared for transfer. The plastic surgeon then injects it through fine cannulas into the individual layers of breast tissue to adjust their volume and shape.
The extent of the procedure depends on the amount of fatty tissue available and the desired correction. Some of the transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed during healing, so in some cases a further procedure may be needed to achieve the desired volume.

Post-operative care
After autologous breast augmentation, it is important to follow the recommended rest regime and your plastic surgeon's instructions. Swelling, bruising and increased sensitivity may occur in the breast area and at the fat harvesting sites. Recovery after autologous augmentation usually involves wearing compression garments, and the breast area needs to be protected from excessive pressure as advised by your doctor.
During the first few weeks, it is advisable to limit intense physical activity and gradually return to your normal routine. The final breast volume settles gradually, depending on healing and the amount of fatty tissue that takes in the new area.
