Ear surgery – otoplasty
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting the shape, size or protrusion of the outer ears. It allows congenital and acquired irregularities to be corrected and the appearance of the ears to be brought into harmony with the proportions of the face.
Who is the procedure suitable for?
Otoplasty is suitable for children and adults bothered by protruding ears, more pronounced asymmetry or irregularities in the shape of the outer ear. It is most often performed for excessively protruding ears, which may be caused by an underdeveloped fold of the ear cartilage or an enlarged conchal bowl.
In children, the procedure can usually be considered from pre-school age, when the outer ears are already sufficiently developed. The suitability and timing of the operation are always assessed by the doctor with regard to the individual anatomy and health.
What does it address?
Protruding outer ears
Ear asymmetry
Irregularities in ear shape
Excessively protruding ears
The procedure
Otoplasty is most often performed under local anaesthesia; for younger children or more extensive corrections, general anaesthesia may be appropriate.
The plastic surgeon usually makes the incision on the back of the outer ear so that the resulting scar is as inconspicuous as possible. The surgeon then adjusts the shape, curvature or position of the cartilage and fixes it in the desired position with stitches.
The specific surgical technique depends on the nature of the irregularity and the client's anatomy. Once the procedure is complete, the ears are covered with a protective bandage.

Post-operative care
After otoplasty, swelling, bruising, increased sensitivity or a feeling of tightness around the ears may occur. Immediately after the operation, the outer ears are protected by a bandage that helps maintain their new position.
In the following weeks, the doctor may recommend wearing an elastic headband, especially during sleep, to prevent the outer ears from bending undesirably. During healing, it is important to limit sport, physical exertion and activities that carry a risk of injury or pressure on the ears.
The return to normal activities depends on the extent of the procedure and your individual healing process. Regular check-ups and following the plastic surgeon's recommendations are also important.
Benefits of the procedure
Correction of one or both ears is possible.
Incision usually placed behind the ear.
Surgical technique tailored to the shape of the cartilage.
The procedure can be performed on children and adults.
FAQ
From what age can ear surgery be performed?
Surgery can be performed once the ear has stopped growing, from around the age of six. The ideal age is considered to be 6–14 years, but the procedure is also possible in adulthood.
Will the scar be visible?
The incision is made on the back of the outer ear, so the scar remains hidden once healed.
How long does the procedure take and what anaesthesia is used?
Otoplasty takes approximately one hour. It is performed under local anaesthesia; at the patient's request, light general anaesthesia with a one-day hospital stay can be chosen.
How long is the bandage worn?
The moulding bandage is worn for 10–14 days. After that, a protective headband is recommended at night and during sport for approximately one month.
How much does ear surgery cost?
Prices start at CZK 25,000. The exact amount depends on the extent and technique and will be determined by the doctor during the consultation.
