Lip surgery

Lip surgery, or cheiloplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting the shape, size and symmetry of the lips. It allows congenital and acquired irregularities to be corrected and the appearance of the lips to be brought into harmony with the proportions of the face.

Who is the procedure suitable for?

Lip surgery is suitable for women and men who are unhappy with the shape, size or proportion of their upper and lower lips. The procedure may be suitable for more pronounced asymmetry, excessively large lips or changes in their appearance related to age or previous injuries.

Surgical correction can also be considered for a thin upper lip or a longer distance between the nose and the upper lip. The suitability of a specific procedure depends on the client's anatomy and the desired extent of correction.

Surgical lip correction options

Lip surgery encompasses several surgical techniques that differ according to the nature of the desired change.

Lip lift – raising the upper lip

A surgical method aimed at shortening the distance between the nose and the upper lip. By removing a narrow strip of skin below the nose, the upper lip can be raised and its red part (vermilion) made more prominent.

Lip asymmetry correction

A surgical correction aimed at reducing differences in the shape or size of the lips. The specific procedure is chosen according to the cause and extent of the asymmetry.

What does it address?

  • Lip asymmetry
  • Undefined upper lip
  • Irregularities in lip shape

The procedure

The course of lip surgery depends on the chosen surgical technique and the desired extent of correction. The procedure is often performed under local anaesthesia; in some cases, general anaesthesia may be appropriate.

When lifting the upper lip, the surgeon removes a section of skin below the nose and adjusts the position of the upper lip. In lip reduction, excess tissue is removed, with the incision usually made on the inner side of the lip. In asymmetry correction, the procedure is tailored to the specific irregularity in shape.

The placement of the incisions and the extent of the procedure are determined by the plastic surgeon according to the client's anatomy and the planned result.

Post-operative care

After lip surgery, swelling, bruising, increased sensitivity or a feeling of tightness in the operated area may occur. In the first few days, it is important to follow the recommended rest regime and protect the lips from excessive mechanical strain.

Depending on the type of procedure, it may be advisable to temporarily limit pronounced facial expressions, eating very hot food and intense physical activity. Gentle hygiene of the operated area and care of the surgical wounds as instructed by the doctor are also important.

The swelling gradually subsides and the final shape of the lips settles during healing. Post-operative care includes regular check-ups and, where applicable, removal of the stitches.

Benefits of the treatment

  • Surgical correction without injectable fillers.
  • Surgical technique chosen according to the desired change.
  • Incisions placed to keep scars inconspicuous.
  • Correction of both the upper and lower lip is possible.

FAQ

What is the difference between a filler and surgical lip correction?

A hyaluronic acid filler takes effect immediately and usually lasts 6–12 months. Surgical lip correction uses your own tissue and its result is long-lasting to permanent.

What is a bullhorn lip lift?

It is a surgical enlargement of the upper lip achieved by removing excess skin below the nose. The scar is hidden at the base of the nostrils and the procedure takes approximately 30–60 minutes under local anaesthesia.

Will there be visible scars after the procedure?

In lip augmentation using your own tissue, the incisions are on the inner side of the lip. With a bullhorn lip lift, the scar is hidden in the crease below the nose.

How long does healing take?

After a bullhorn lip lift, the stitches are usually removed after 5–7 days; after surgical lip augmentation, usually on the 10th–12th day.

How much does lip surgery cost?

Surgical lip correction starts at CZK 37,000. The doctor will determine the exact price during the consultation according to the chosen method and extent.
