Who is the treatment suitable for?
Circumcision is suitable primarily for men with an overly tight foreskin (phimosis), which can complicate hygiene and lead to recurrent inflammation. A tight foreskin can also make urination, erection or sex difficult. Indications may also include suspected cancer concealed beneath the foreskin or acute constriction of the glans by the foreskin (paraphimosis). Many men also choose circumcision for hygienic, religious or aesthetic reasons. The doctor decides whether the procedure is suitable at a consultation.
What is circumcision?
Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis. The extent of removal can be adjusted to the patient’s aesthetic preferences – from partial to complete exposure of the glans. The procedure is considered straightforward, usually with a good and lasting cosmetic result and a low rate of complications. Besides resolving medical problems such as phimosis, circumcision can make hygiene easier and improve comfort in your intimate life.

How the procedure works
Circumcision is performed on an outpatient basis or with a one-day hospital stay. It is carried out under short general anaesthesia or regional (nerve block) anaesthesia. Local anaesthesia is not recommended unless the patient’s health requires it, as the injected fluid impairs the surgeon’s orientation in the tissue and may affect the cosmetic result. The procedure itself takes 30 to 60 minutes. The wound is closed with absorbable sutures, which do not need to be removed later.

Course of the treatment
The procedure is preceded by a personal consultation with the doctor, during which you will be examined, the reason for circumcision will be discussed and the desired extent of foreskin removal agreed. The doctor will also choose a suitable type of anaesthesia and explain the post-operative regimen. On the day of the procedure, you come to the clinic, where, once you are under anaesthesia, the operation takes approximately half an hour to an hour. After a short recovery, you can usually go home, or stay for a one-day hospital stay.
Post-operative care
Three to four days of rest are recommended after the procedure. The absorbable sutures dissolve on their own during healing, so no visit is needed to remove them. Physical activity and sexual intercourse can be resumed after about four weeks. The doctor will give you detailed instructions on hygiene, wound care and suitable clothing at the consultation, so that you are well prepared for the recovery period.
