Testicular prosthesis implantation
Silicone testicular implants offer an aesthetic solution after the loss of a testicle or where a testicle has failed to develop. The procedure can reduce the cosmetic deficit as well as the psychological burden associated with it.
Who is the treatment suitable for?
Implantation is intended for men who have lost a testicle or in whom a testicle has not developed. The most common reasons are conditions following injury, cancer or severe inflammation that required removal of the testicle, an undescended testicle that had to be removed, or congenital absence. Relative indications may include conditions following hormonal treatment, for example after bilateral orchiectomy in the treatment of prostate cancer. The procedure helps to ease the sense of loss and restore the natural appearance of the scrotum. Suitability is always assessed by the doctor at a consultation.
The implant – a silicone prosthesis
Testicular prostheses are silicone or gel implants, similar in material to breast implants. They are usually available in five sizes, given in centimetres and cubic centimetres, so a prosthesis matching the other side can be chosen. Depending on the type, they have a smooth or textured surface and a fixation loop that prevents the implant from shifting. Each prosthesis is supplied in sterile packaging with a sterility indicator, is certified and carries an identification label. The implants are notable for their true-to-life shape and feel and very good tolerability.
What does it address?
- Testicle loss after injury
- Following cancer treatment
- Congenital absence
- Undescended testicle
Surgical approach
The implant can be inserted via two approaches. The groin (inguinal) approach is used mainly in urology departments during planned cancer surgery – the prosthesis can be inserted as part of the main operation, although preparing the space and securing the implant tends to be more demanding. More common is the scrotal approach, which is suitable for most indications. It allows the space for the implant to be prepared well and the implant to be reliably secured to the subcutaneous tissue so that its position and height look natural.

Course of the treatment
At the initial consultation, the doctor will assess your health, discuss your expectations and select a suitable implant size. The procedure itself is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local or short general anaesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision large enough to insert the prosthesis, creates a space in the scrotum and, under strictly sterile conditions, inserts and secures the implant. The subcutaneous tissue is closed with absorbable sutures and the skin usually with non-absorbable sutures. The stay at the clinic after the procedure usually lasts only a few hours.
Post-operative care
After the procedure, wearing supportive underwear and avoiding strenuous physical activity for several weeks is recommended. The doctor may prescribe painkillers and antibiotics to prevent infection. Skin sutures are removed after approximately seven days. Full recovery usually takes several weeks, during which regular check-ups are important so that the doctor can monitor healing and the correct position of the implant.
